‘American Idol’ Season 13 auditions will come to Detroit’s Ford Field on July 21

Despite the fact longtime judge Randy Jackson won’t be back next season, and rumors persist of a whole new judge’s panel, the auditions will go on for next season.

And Detroit is getting its first audition since 2002 when auditions came to the Motor City for Season 2.

Here is a list of audition dates, according to AmericanIdol.com

Zach Galifianakis hosts the funniest SNL show of the season?

Actor Zach Galifianakis really scored big with the “Saturday Night Live” audience over the weekend with a show that some are saying is the funniest of the season.

In his monologue he said that almost every week someone stops and asks him, “Has anyone ever told you, you look like the guy from the ‘Hangover’? No offense.” Later, he played piano and talked about his struggles in life.

“Sometimes when I’m bored I like to look up things online to see if there’s something I can’t find out,” he said. “I like to stump Google. The other day I Googled, ‘How many Mexicans live in North Korea?’ Google didn’t know.”

Well, I don’t know: The cover of “Back to Black” is an odd song on the forthcoming “Great Gatsby” soundtrack, and fans are not overly excited.

The song also has an irritating promo for a radio show. That doesn’t help much.

NIGHTLIFE
The Prince & Michael Experience features classic tunes spun by DJ Dave Paul from San Francisco. The show is at 9 p.m. April 27 in the Stache Lounge at The Intersection in Grand Rapids. More details at sectionlive.com.

THEATRE
I saw the Broadway musical “Wicked” on Thursday night at Miller Auditorium in Kalamazoo. It’s a great show, and it continues through May 5. Check out my review.

‘Wicked: The Musical’ wows audience at Miller Auditorium in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO — It was my second “Wicked” experience — Thursday night’s show at Miller Auditorium — and each time I see the production I marvel at the script.

Oh, don’t get me wrong; the voices, musical score, stage production and special effects all make this Broadway musical a must-see for any theater geek (young and old).

But the prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” which tells the story before Dorothy and Toto crash land the house in a twister and the little girl from Kansas walks away with a pair of ruby slippers, focuses on everything that led up to that fateful day.

The script, written by Winnie Holzman with lyrics and music by Stephen Shwartz, is from Gregory Maguire’s satirical 1995 novel “Wicked.” And it answers all of your questions regarding the relationship between Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, who we all know as the Wicked Witch of the West, as well as the Wizard of Oz, the flying monkeys, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion.

The script, to me, is the star!

But fans RAVE about everything else. And they should. Even though the songs have been called “homongenized” by some critics, the story is so compelling that you put it down.

Expect big crowds for the remaining shows, with tickets more available on weekdays and during matinees.

Additional shows: Today through May 5, 2013 at Miller Auditorium.

Showtime: 2 1/2 hours, plus a 15-minute intermission.

Meet the Gonzalez who broke up the Yu Darvish ‘prefect game’

The truth shall set me FREE!

It was not career .234 hitter Marwin Gonzalez of the Oakland A’s who broke up the Prefect Game bid by the Texas Rangers’ Yu Darvish on April 2, 2013.

It was me, as in John Gonzalez — a muti-media entertainment journalist in Grand Rapids, Michigan, who also coaches a summer travel baseball team.

I should have known better, really.

After a long night of reality TV viewing — recapping ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” for MLive.com and watching the lead-in show “Splash” — I decided to turn in for the night as my wife and 16-year-old son watched baseball.

Hey, we’re a baseball family. I’ve coached for 30 years, and I have two older sons with college baseball experience on the mound. Heck, I even tried out for the New York Yankees when I was 17.

On this night — a night when Texas baseball fans were about to celebrate an historic moment — I was fast asleep.

That’s when my son, who is high school pitcher, burst into my room, where my wife was already watching the game.

“Oh, good,” I thought I heard him say.

“You’re about to see history,” he said.

The last thing I remember when I hit my pillow I was watching ABC’s “Body of Proof.”

“What’s going on,” I said, not even opening my eyes.

“It’s a big deal,” my son said. “Yu Darvish is pitching into the 9th inning.”

Now, I knew Yu pitched for the Texas Rangers. I casually follow the Rangers because I have a lot of relatives who live in the Dallas area. My team is the Detroit Tigers, a team that has been a big part of my life from my earliest memories of hearing Hall of Fame announcer Ernie Harwell on my transistor radio.

I did follow the Rangers a lot more in the ’90s. That’s when my grandmother in Texas, who had lost her eyesight, but tuned into the games every night to see if her “Johnny” was playing. In her latter years she was convinced the Texas Rangers’ outfielder Juan Gonzalez was ME! — her grandson.

Hey, she knew I was a baseball player growing up. She missed the news that my 72-mile-per-hour fastball was barley good enough to get a few innings on my high school baseball team. But I was a superstar when I was 13 years old and my summer team won the Babe Ruth league state championship! (Shout out to my homies on the team, Scott Glombowski, Curt Dean, Mark Carroll, Darin Aguinaga and the gang!)

Getting back to how I messed things up for Yu Darvish.

So, as my son was talking about the 9th inning, I knew it only meant one thing: A no-hitter.

Everyone — even the most casual baseball fan — knows that it is taboo to utter the words “no-hitter.” I heard my son say, “that’s two outs.”

And then, he said: “Mom, you better wake up Fish!” That’s a nick name my kids gave me. Why, I’m not sure. I think it has something to do with my lack of hair, and when I wake up sometimes, the hair I do have tends to spike up.

“I’m awake,” I said. “Is he throwing a no hitter?”

Yes, I said it.

“Better,” my son said.

That’s when I sat up, rubbing my eyes: “Oh, is it a perfect game?”

As soon as I said “Perfect Game,” Marwin Gonzalez of the Oakland A’s took the Yu Darvish pitch right up the middle, and the perfect game bid was OVER.

“Oh my gosh,” my son said, and he stormed out of my room.

My wife said something; I don’t know what. I was half asleep.

So, the long and short of it — it was me, Yu. Sorry.

Ranger fans, don’t blame anyone but me.

The Michigan supermodel was on SI’s cover last year, and now she returns for the 2013 edition. News broke Friday night when the cover photo was leaked online.

That forced Sports Illustrated to tweet the cover late Friday night. SI had planned to let “The Late Show” with David Letterman to debut the cover on Monday night.

He is scheduled to interview Kate Upton on Tuesday.

The 2013 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition will hit newsstands on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013.

Is this Prince? His latest song, ‘Screwdriver,’ is a glam-rock throwback!

And I do mean throwback. Take one listen and it sounds like maybe a Poison song from back in the day.

The line: “I’m your driver, you’re my screw” makes it sound like it could be a Prince song.

But the ending guitar line and big “Prince” name at the end of the video makes you believe it’s an official Prince song.

I’m going to play the song on my “Going Gonzo Show” today to see if anyone can guess who sings the song.

Grand Rapids Skywalk proposal!

A Grand Rapids couple recently got engaged in downtown, and it was all captured on video.

The video was done by Bradley Productions, the same company known for the elaborate Lip Dub Proposal at Tunnel Park in Holland.

But the proposal of Mark Van Dyke and Kelly VanSickle is less complicated with some simple touches. It’s very sweet.

Mark works at Spectrum Health as the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator.

Kelly is a social workers for Kentwood Public Schools.

The cheerleaders in the video are Kelly’s middle school competitive cheer team.

“We have been dating for 6 months, but have been friends for 5 years,” Kelly said in an email.

“I have been suspicious that a ring was coming soon, but I had no idea that extent that he had planned.”

Inauguration 2013: Do you care if Beyonce lip-synced the National Anthem?

On my “Going Gonzo Show” on Monday, our guest Scott Winters speculated that pop star Beyonce “probably” lip-synced the “Star Spangled Banner” in front of the international audience to see President Barrack Obama sworn in for his second term.

My producer, Marky Mark, said “No Way!”

I even thought it seemed impossible that anyone could get away with that on such an intimate, and important, stage.

I can see the Super Bowl or other sporting events, where a lot of singers should have pre-recorded the anthem (6 People Who Should Have Pre-Recorded the National Anthem).

But not the Presidential Inauguration.

Well, word started coming out last night that Beyonce in all likelihood lip-synced in front of the President, and our country.

According to various reports, the musicians were told at the last minute that a recording was being used instead.

And Beyonce posted various photos on her Tumblr page, showing herself singing in a recording studio. The recording is not uncommon.

Manti Te’o dead girlfriend story a ‘hoax’

What a day for Notre Dame football and its Heisman candidate whose heart-breaking story captivated a nation this season.

The story of All-American linebacker Manti Te’o’s dead girlfriend was all a hoax, according to reports!

The news broke today, Jan. 16, on Deadspin.com, which used some basic reporting skills to uncover the story, and also went back to look at former tweets to pull all the pieces together.

In September, the legion of Fighting Irish fans rallied around their star when he decided to play against Michigan State despite the deaths of two people close to him.

First, his grandmother passed away, and 24 hours later a close friend — who would soon become widely known as his girlfriend — lost her battle with leukemia.

But the University today said their star player was the victim of a sick “hoax.” The woman never existed.

However, Deadspin.com says that the senior player who is getting ready for the NFL draft, might have been in on the hoax.

Te’o said he is embarrassed:

This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her. To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone’s sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating. It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother’s death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life. I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been. In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was. Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I’m looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft.

GVSU Pizza Wars, Miss Arenacross 2013, Torrence the Starving Artist and more!

We have a busy day today on my “Going Gonzo Show,” which airs weekdays from 1-2 p.m. on WJRW-AM (1340) in Grand Rapids.

First, Torrence The Starving Artist joins us as he does every Wednesday to talk about the latest in food.

Then, Miss. Arenacross Lindsey Scheltema joins us to talk about Arenacross racing this weekend at Van Andel Arena Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Lastly, we talk to Doug Lipinski about GVSU’s Pizza Wars this Saturday at the Grand Valley State Lakers basketball game! They are giving away 6,500 slices of pizza from 6-8 p.m.
